The Westin Aruba Resort recently completed its first phase of its $24 million renovation. All guestrooms and suites have been upgraded with new furnishings and amenities, including marble baths, 32’ flat screen televisions, an array of Westin’s Heavenly Bath products, and Westin’s signature Heavenly Bed. The resort’s 12,000 square foot Casablanca Casino, which received 200 new state of the art slot machines, features Rick’s Café and also Comix Café, offering first-class comedy as one of the many entertainment options on the premises.
In addition to upgrading The Westin Aruba Resort, Starwood has plans to launch the first Westin-branded, vacation ownership resort on Aruba. This resort, managed by Starwood Vacation Ownership, will be located on land adjacent to the hotel and will feature 154 two-bedroom villas. Sales for the deluxe accommodations will begin in early 2007.
AIRPORT, AIRLINES & CRUISESHIPS:
• Aruba Airport Authority NV (AAA) introduced a new Central Security System at the Aeropuerto Internacional Reina Beatrix last December 20, 2006 leading to higher efficiency and a much better passenger flow in the screening of passengers and hand luggage. The new Central Security screening means that all passengers, including those on flights to Europe, South America, Netherlands Antilles are now screened at TSA security screening levels. Previous upgrades such as the 3rd phase of the landscaping project, the automation of the parking area, the installation of the information kiosk in the arrival hall, providing free baggage carts, the VIP-room renovation, new elevators and now Central Security, will further significantly improve the service level of the airport.
• Welcome back Martinair! The Dutch airline Martinair will commence weekly flights to Aruba as of April 1, 2007 and that is no joke. The weekly frequency will be carried out with a B767-300ER aircraft with a seating capacity of 268 passengers and will make one stop in Curacao before returning to Holland. This proves that there is an additional demand for the destination which fits perfectly within Martinair’s business plans and Aruba’s objective in the further development of the European market.
• Delta Airlines is increasing weekend capacity from New York JFK Airport as of February 18, 2007 with non stop service on Sunday in addition to their existing Saturday flight.
• Jet Blue will offer more seats to Aruba for the summer season as they will increase JFK service to Aruba to twice daily as of May 1 through September 5, 2007.
• First Choice announced additional charter service from the United Kingdom during summer 2007 from Manchester in addition to the existing Gatwick service.
• 2006 was a record breaking year for Aruba! According to the Aruba Cruise Tourism (ACT). Aruba received a total of 314 port calls totaling 591.474 visitors, compared to 311 port calls totaling 552.819 visitors for the previous year of 2005, representing a 7% (38.655) increase in visitors. The top individual cruise line for the year 2006 was Royal Caribbean Cruise Line with a total of 201.433 visitors. The top 4 cruise ships for 2006 were Carnival Destiny with 155.808 visitors, Adventure of the Seas with 130.405 visitors, Brilliance of the Seas with 32.359 visitors and Volendam with 22.376 visitors. The first three months of the cruise high season showed a total of 206.179 visitors compared to 193.681 visitors in 2005, representing an increase of 12.498 visitors. An increase of 15% in port calls was recorded within a ten year span from 1996, with a total of 273 and 2006, with a total of 314 calls. Total visitors increased from 316.749 to 591.474 between 1996 and 2006, representing an 86.7% increase. There will be a total of 8 new cruise ships scheduled to make port calls in Aruba for 2007 with an estimated total of 309 port calls. The cruise ships are as follows: Minerva II, Albatross, Holiday Dream, Elation, Island Princess, Emerald Princess, Aida Vita and Sea Cloud.

• “Mathilde” restaurant, formerly known as “Chez Mathilde”, is now in a newly designed relaxed “Island Chic” setting with the old Chez Mathilde ambiance and a new concept of two restaurants under the same roof. Mathilde is only open for dinner. In addition to “Mathilde”, guests can now also enjoy the “M” Bistro Lounge. “M” offers daily lunch from 11:30 to 3:00pm and dinner from 6:00pm to 11:00 pm, and late night suppers on Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00pm to 1:00am. ARTs & CULTURE:
• Now there are three more reasons to visit the Fort Zoutman Historical Museum again!
1. “Cushina di Titi” (Titi’s Kitchen) is now open at the Fort Zoutman Historical Museum. The new exhibition at the museum is in honor of Titi Tromp, a person who knows a lot about Aruba’s past and is very well known in the community. The exhibition is located in the small doll like house right next to the entrance of the museum.
2. Touchtone TV’s, new to visitors at the museum, it allows them to navigate through a menu of options by just touching the desired option on the screen, be it text information, videos or pictures of the history of Aruba. There will be a Touchtone TV in the first hall with information and in the second and third hall there will be other Touchtone TV’s covering topics on exhibit.
3. “A history lesson in the ambiance of our Historical Museum”. This is a project executed by Museum Curator Luc Alofs together with IPA (Pedagogical Institute of Aruba), specifically for students, consisting of a collection of handbooks on the history of Aruba which include agriculture, fishery, women and the elite on the island. This interactive method, created by the future teachers of Aruba, aims to stimulate more museum visits by children and youngsters.
• Oranjestad Kunsthuis Café,(Oranjestad Art House) officially opened on January 19th 2007. It is located right across Fort Zoutman and is home to local artists, painters and interior designers. It is the brain child of well-known Gilbert Senchi from South End Art Gallery together with interior designer, Karin Martens and architect Jani Croes. It is more than a gallery as it is a meeting place where almost everything will be available for purchase. Gilbert and Karin are present most evenings and are more than willing to explain any of the artwork and give a background on the artists. Outside tables allow the guests and art lovers to enjoy conversations all fresco. It is open Friday and Saturday nights from 8:00pm and really livens up after around 11:00pm until the owners go home. • International Roaming with CDMA phones now also possible in Aruba. Visitors from the U.S.A. with a CDMA mobile phone can now roam in Aruba. Recently SETAR, the local all service provider, reached an agreement with the U.S.A. providers Verizon and Sprint, making it possible that a wide variety of mobile phone users can just travel with their own phone to Aruba and use international roaming. Besides the existing roaming possibilities with GSM (Cingular Wireless and T-Mobile), now CDMA customers from Verizon and Sprint can also communicate while on the move in Aruba.
